Over a period of decades, the semiconductor industry has introduced hundreds of Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) throughout its manufacturing processes. Known as “forever chemicals,” these compounds are highly toxic and persistent. Despite the industry’s unquestioned technical prowess, it has done little to prevent its PFAS wastes from entering the environment. Furthermore, it avoids reporting most of those releases to the public, and it lobbies against government regulation. As the U.S. government pours billions of dollars into industry expansion, CCU believes that there is an opportunity to reduce chip-making pollution and limit the threat these chemicals pose to public health and the environment.
